Memorandum of Understanding between Unity University (UU) and Woldia University (WU)

On February 25, 2025, Unity University (UU) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Woldia University (WU) to strengthen collaboration in research, staff exchange, and other joint initiatives.


The signing ceremony took place at the Office of the President and CEO in the presence of vice presidents and other staff members. Dr. Tesfaye Teshome, Senior Vice President for Research/Development, Community, and Industry Linkages at UU, provided a brief overview of the MoU, highlighting its significance in reinforcing the partnership between the two institutions.


The MoU was officially signed by Dr. Berhanu Sisay, Provost of Unity University and delegate of Dr. Arega Yirdaw, President and CEO of UU, along with Dr. Abebe Girma, President of Woldia University.


The signing of this MoU marks a pivotal step in strengthening collaboration between private and government institutions. Both universities are committed to maximizing the benefits of this partnership, with a shared goal of enhancing educational and research capacities in alignment with national development objectives.

During the ceremony, both Dr. Berhanu Sisay and Dr. Abebe Girma delivered brief statements outlining their expectations for the collaboration. Dr. Berhanu emphasized UU’s leadership’s eagerness to collaborate with WU, particularly under the guidance of Dr. Arega Yirdaw. Likewise, Dr. Abebe Girma expressed his enthusiasm about renewing the previous partnership with UU and highlighted the MoU’s potential to facilitate staff exchanges and joint research initiatives.


The signing of this MoU marks a pivotal step in strengthening collaboration between private and government institutions. Both universities are committed to maximizing the benefits of this partnership, with a shared goal of enhancing educational and research capacities in alignment with national development objectives.

Unity University Celebrates the 42nd Commencement Ceremony

Unity University held its colorful 42nd commencement ceremony honoring about 2,000 of its graduates both from postgraduate and Undergraduate Degree on February 15 in Addis Ababa and Dessie; and on February 16, 2025 in Adama.


On the occasions trophies were presented by Dr. Arega Yirdaw, President and CEO of the University, to high-achieving graduates, one each from the postgraduate and undergraduate programs. Medals were given to high-achieving graduates from each faculty and distinction students were also recognized and honored for their outstanding academic performances.


In addition, incentives were given with certificates of recognition and appreciation to eight employees of the University that rendered excelling performances diligently with loyalty beyond the call of their duties.

COLLABORATION IN FOCUS: EXCITING FUTURE PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN UNITY UNIVERSITY AND RUTGERS CAMDEN UNIVERSITY

A delegation of scholars from Rutgers Camden University, including Chancellor Antonio D. Tillis, Senior Vice Chancellor Jimmy Jung, and Global Representative Christa Sanders, visited Unity University on September 5, 2024 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. They were warmly welcomed by Unity University’s President Dr. Arega Yirdaw and his team.


During the visit, Dr. Arega highlighted Unity University’s impressive growth from a small language and law school to a thriving institution. The two universities discussed the importance of mutual benefits in international partnerships, focusing on collaborative research, staff utilization, and health worker certification.


Both institutions are committed to empowering women and plan to prioritize this in their joint ventures. Exciting opportunities lie ahead as they explore technology transfer, scholarship exchange programs, and access to digital libraries.

Unity University Celebrates Tax Law Training Graduates


On Friday, August 30, 2024, Unity University proudly celebrated the graduation of 30 students who completed a 30-hour basic tax law training. This program was organized by the Tax Affairs Directorate of the Ministry of Revenue that included a total of 138 participants from four Universities.


The event featured speeches from key figures, including the Academic Vice President Dr.Tesfaye Teshome, the Faculty Dean, Ato Maschalu Demissie, and the Department Head Ato Melaku, who commended students for their dedication and resilience. Certificates were awarded to all graduates, with special recognition given to five top achievers by the Academic Vice President.

Unity University Students Complete Basic Tax Law Training Program

On Saturday, August 16, 2024, 30 students from Unity University celebrated their graduation from a rigorous 30-hour basic tax law training at Nexus Hotel in Addis Ababa. They were part of a larger cohort of 138 university students from Addis Ababa University, Gage University, and Adamas University.

During the ceremony, the Minister of Revenue, Ms. Aynalem Niguse, emphasized the critical role these graduates will play in educating society about tax matters. Customs Commissioner Debelle Kabeta reiterated the importance of a sustainable tax system and community education to enhance revenue performance in the country.


The event also recognized students with outstanding results and the Faculty Deans from each university who facilitated the training. Unity University was proud to achieve second place among female students, with Dr. Tesfaye Teshome, Senior Academic Vice President, receiving the participation award of the university on behalf of the Institution.


The day was filled with various activities, including the inauguration of a book Ministry of Revenues has published on tax administration law teaching by the directorate of tax affairs education, a message from the Minister, and a certificate presentation ceremony for both students and participating universities and a charity donation for the disaster relief efforts in the Kefa Zone. The event concluded with speeches, a tea break, and a celebratory lunch.

Capping Ceremony for Technical Vocational Educational and Training Nursing Trainees at Unity University


On Friday, August 16, 2024, the Faculty of Technical Vocational Educational and Training (TVET) held its annual Capping Ceremony for nursing trainees at the Unity University auditorium. The event, attended by the Unity University community, celebrated the achievements of our dedicated nursing students.


The event commenced with heartfelt welcoming speeches delivered by distinguished guests, alongside the Dean and Department Head of the TVET faculty. Following these addresses, the trainers participated in a ceremonial donning of caps, symbolizing their commitment to the nursing profession. This was complemented by the lighting of the Florence Nightingale lamp, a powerful emblem of the enduring spirit of nursing.


In a tribute to Florence Nightingale’s remarkable legacy, a solemn oath-taking ceremony was held, reinforcing the values and dedication inherent in the nursing vocation. To further inspire their peers, three nursing trainees shared uplifting messages, encouraging fellow students to embrace their journey with passion and perseverance.


The day concluded with a joyful photo session, capturing the essence of this significant milestone in the trainees’ lives.

Bloomberg Media Initiative Africa (BMIA) hosted a fruitful stakeholders marketing event for Financial Journalism Training (FJT) program in Addis Ababa.


On August 13th, 2024, the Bloomberg Media Initiative Africa (BMIA) held a stakeholder marketing event for its Financial Journalism Training (FJT) program at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The event brought together key partners and participants to showcase the valuable training opportunity.


The event commenced with registration and breakfast from 9:00- 10:00 AM. This was followed by welcome remarks from Dr. Wondwossen Mulugeta, Vice President for Institutional Development, Addis Ababa University and Dr. Arega Yirdaw, CEO and President of Unity University.
Dr. Arega emphasized that the media acts as the fourth branch of government, underscoring its vital importance in our interconnected digital landscape, where data is shared rapidly and information spreads quickly. Consequently, Bloomberg’s Financial Journalism Training (FJT) program is essential for promoting accurate data distribution on both national and international levels. Additionally, the FJT will help familiarize the public and potential investors with new financial systems, including Capital Market and market-driven currency systems.


The program also featured the opening remark by Ms Hana Tehelku, Director General of the Ethiopia Capital Markets Authority and an insightful keynote address by Mr. Daniel Belayneh, CEO of Africa Renaissance Television (Arts Tv).


Ms. Aguil Deng, Senior Program Manager at Bloomberg LP, then provided an address on behalf of the organization. This was followed by a detailed discussion on the BMIA, FJT program presented by Ms. Christine Mwangi, Secretariat Director at Strathmore Business School.


Bloomberg’s FJT program is a signature initiative sponsored by Bloomberg Philanthropies aiming to enhance skilled financial journalists and analysts, filling a critical gap in data-driven journalism culture across Africa.


The delegates are from Journalism, Accounting and Finance, Economics, Business, Banking and Insurance, and Law backgrounds. The program modules are built with three themes; Business and Finance, Policy and Financial Journalism Research and Writing. The 22 day program spans 6-months with compulsory study blocks.


The event was concluded with a vote of thanks from Dr. Samson Mekonnen, the Country Program Manager for Ethiopia.
The stakeholder’s event was an important milestone in promoting the BMIA, FJT initiative and strengthening partnerships to support media development in Ethiopia and the broader region.
